What are Wocky Sox?

The wacky new way to experience PE!! Going “old school” has never been more colorful! We are launching a fun new activity program called Wocky-Sox. It’s based on exciting games that feature the use of SOCKS to play games – but not just any old socks – WOCKY SOX!! At Tandalay one of the most important things we focus on is making physical education and healthy activities readily available and accessible to everyone.  We offer great recreation equipment to coincide with our curriculum, activities and games, but we’re still thinking about how we can offer an alternative to purchasing equipment – and bam like a “sock” to the face it hit us – Wocky Sox!!

Wocky Sox is an eBook of games that can be played with a pair of socks (bet you didn’t see that coming)!  Simply take a couple of old socks, tuck them into each other to form a ball and you’re ready to PLAY!  To make true “Wocky-Sox” tie-die them in fun colors! Here is a sample game to get you started, but for all 25 games check out http://www.all-out-play.com/hard-copy/wocky-sox-ebook.html .  It’s a PDF download, so as soon as you purchase it we will send you an email with the Wocky Sox download!

Sample Games:

1. Wocky Tag

  • 20% of players are designated to be “It” players. They have no Wocky-flag.
  • All other players tuck a corner of a Wocky-flag in their pocket or waistband. It must be in the back, barely tucked, and easy to grab. Players are not allowed to block a flag-grab.
  • On “go” all players without a Wocky attempt to grab one off another player. If successful, he/she keeps the flag and runs away! (Players might want to let each other know when they get someone’s flag.)
  • Players who lose their flags simply attempt to grab one from someone else! No grab-backs!
  • The goal is to be in possession of a flag when time is called. Play a number of shorter rounds to allow for different people to end with a Wocky-flag!

2. Wockys Away

  • Divide the playing area, and the group, in half – or play on the two sides of a dividing line.
  • Scatter the Wocky Sox (one per player or more) randomly around, but with the same amount, on both sides OR place them ALL on the center line.
  • On the phrase “Wockies Away!” each team tries to rid their side of the field of Wocky Sox by throwing them to the other team’s field.
  • Players may pick up and throw only one Wocky at a time.
  • When Leader calls time, all players FREEZE instantly.
  • The team with the least number of Wocky Sox on their side of the line, wins.
  • Sox released AFTER the stop signal = 5 point penalty.

Repeat game as desired.

Physical Education Workshops and Curriculum Integration

Yesterday we spoke with Mr. Joe Johnson, Principal from Monterey Hills Elementary in South Pasadena, California about the response from staff and teachers to the two workshops that Tandalay conducted for the South Pasadena School District and how the implementation of the Tandalay Curriculum was going.  Monterey Hills has no Physical Education Instructor, so each teacher must meet the Physical Education requirements within their classroom.  The Tandalay Curriculum has helped Monterey Hills meet the standards and enriched the students with positive, FUN and successful physical activity.  See the video below — just one example in many of how the Tandalay Curriculum helps students and teachers!  Thank you to Monterey Hills and especially Mr. Joe Johnson!

Pledge to PLAY!

PLAY is a fundamental key to the success of healthy people — if it’s not FUN it’s not going to last. Tandalay encourages PLAY at all levels and we challenge YOU to take the PLEDGE FOR PLAY!

Take the PLEDGE and be proud to PLAY each and every day.  After you take the pledge you can download one of the various patches to put on your site, facebook, myspace, twitter or where ever you like — even print it out and stick it on your fridge.  We also put your name up on our Pledge Wall.  The goal is to promote positive PLAY for all ages.  Take the pledge!

THE PLEDGE:

I hereby pledge to embrace the JOY of PLAY with every opportunity I can create. I will play Shadow-Tag when the sun is shining, and play ball when it is not (even if it is with a ball of socks)!. I will dance even when someone is watching (and especially when they are not!), I will move with vigor every day and learn to have FUN again. I accept the challenge to be silly, to let loose, to roll on the floor laughing while I crunch or push my way to better health.

I will share this JOY with others by inviting them to play too! I will do my best to promote and/or to provide opportunities for play in my community, in my neighborhood, and in my home. I understand that PLAY is essential for youth and adults alike, and that through PLAY I will enhance the quality, vitality, and enjoyment of my life and of those around me. I hereby give myself permission to laugh with enthusiasm, to move with vigor, and to PLAY with JOY!

OPPORTUNITIES to promote/provide PLAY in your home, neighborhood, and community:

At home: sign up for our Family’s at PLAY newsletter for bi-monthly family game and activity ideas and fitness challenges; subscribe to our Online Mag – PhatKidz.com – for really cool kidz of ALL ages! Every week explore new games and fitness challenges while checking out current trends in everything active – from extreme sports to opportunities in your community!

In your neighborhood: Fluffilo Fridays, Wocky Sox Saturdays, Ultimate Sundays – organize PLAY days in your neighborhood. Get a bag of Fluffilos to take to the park or have everyone bring a couple pairs of socks with them (one long, one short) and play some Wocky-Sox activities. Grab a Frisbee and play Ultimate on Sundays… the options are limited only by your own imagination!

In your community: Volunteer to be a PLAY Leader at school or after school, promote a Wocky Sox campaign at your school or church, or take it a step further and become a CampPlay Leader!
